Snow is falling heavily in Milford this morning, and that means another snow day for public school students. The Milford Board of Education canceled school due to the weather, actually making that decision late Tuesday night in anticipation of heavy snowfall.
Snow is predicted to be heavy at times in northern Connecticut with a mix of sleet and rain in this area, according to the National Weather Service. A rain/snow line is forecast to develop along the coast by 7:30 a.m. and move inland to the Hartford area by 10:30 a.m. North of the line heavy snow is expected, with sleet and freezing rain south of the line.
The Wednesday morning rush hour is not expected to be easy, with three to five inches of snow cover on roads by the start of the rush hour, low visibilities, heavy snow falling, and very slick driving conditions.
Snowfall rates of one to two inches per hour can be expected north of the changeover line.
After the end of the morning rush hour, road conditions may start to improve along the coast, according to the state’s Department of Emergency Management. Temperatures are forecast to hold in the upper 20’s in the northern part of the state and rise to near 35 degrees at the coast. Some icing is expected in southern and central Connecticut, which may result in some power outages.
Light snow is expected to continue through the afternoon rush hour and taper off completely Wednesday evening between 6 and 8 p.m. Highs are expected to be near freezing with temperatures starting to fall back into the upper 20’s by the end of the afternoon rush hour.
Total snowfall for this storm is forecast to range from four to six inches along the coast, a bit more in the rest of the state.
There are several meetings planned in Milford tonight, including a Board of Finance budget hearing. The hearing gives residents a chance to comment on the city and school spending plans for 2014-15. So far those meetings have not been canceled, but updates will be posted on the Milford Mirror website.
