Woman struck, killed by train in Southport

A woman was struck and killed by an Amtrak train just west of the Southport Station Tuesday afternoon.

The woman was hit around 1:42 p.m., according to a Metro-North spokesman. Word on the condition and identity of the woman was not immediately available.

Metro-North is warning of delays near the Southport station due to police activity. Danbury Branch customers may experience delays of approximately 20 minutes, while half-hour delays were being reported on the New Haven Line.

More details will be posted as they become available.

This is the fifth time in 2015 and the seventh time in a little more than a year that a person has been struck by a train in the Fairfield area.

On Sept. 9, a pedestrian was fatally struck bythe 10:04 a.m. Metro-North train from Grand Central terminal to New Haven at about 11:20 a.m., just east of the Westport station.

On May 27, a person was struck by a Metro-North train just east of the Fairfield Metro station. The train was the 2:04 p.m. out of Grand Central due in New Haven at 4:06.

On March 29, a person was killed when struck while attempting to cross the tracks at the downtown Fairfield train station.

On Sept. 29, 2014, a person was struck and killed on the tracks along Fairfield Avenue, near the Fairfield-Bridgeport line.

And on Sept. 6, 2014, a person was struck on the tracks and killed by an Amtrak train at the downtown Fairfield station.
