Irish music
Fiddler Eugene Bender will join the P.V. O’Donnell Comhaltas Ceoltóirí Éireann Irish music session on Thursday, May 17 at St. Gabriel’s Parish Hall, 26 Broadway, Milford. The free session starts at 7:45 p.m. BYOB. Musicians, dancers, singers and guests are welcomed.
Eugene started playing traditional Irish music in the Sligo style when he was in the third grade. He was a student of fiddle maestro Brian Conway for over 13 years, and won the Mid-Atlantic Region Fleadh Cheoil competition twice. In addition to playing in the tri-state area sessions and events, Bender runs a weekly Irish traditional music session every Sunday at the Garth Road Inn in Scarsdale, NY. Beginning Bird Walk
Friday, May 18, 3 to 4 p.m., guided bird walk through the marsh, beach and upland areas of the Connecticut Audubon Society’s Coastal Center to view and learn about the birds that are here this time of year, including resident Osprey pair. For ages 10 and up. Pre-registration is required. CAS members: $5; nonmembers: $10. This event is held at the Coastal Center, 1 Milford Point Road. Movie night
The Greatest Showman is an original musical inspired by the life of P.T. Barnum, starring Hugh Jackman. The movie will be shown at the United Church of Christ in Devon, Friday, May 18. Debit/credit cards accepted. Doors open at 6 p.m. Dinner is 6 to 7 p.m. and includes a hot dog, chips, dessert, beverage and popcorn. Dinner is $6, Ages 3-5 $3, under 3 is free. The movie follows and is free.
Irish American history
Dr. John Day Tully, Professor of History at Central Connecticut State University, will be speaking on Sunday, May 20, at 1 p.m. at the Irish Heritage Society of Milford Clubhouse, 131 Bridgeport Ave. Author of the book Ireland and Irish Americans,1932 – 1945, Dr. Tully’s presentation will explore life during this period for both the Irish and Irish Americans by examining the politics, diplomacy, literature, and Irish American leaders of that time. Historical Society
The Milford Historical Society will hold its 88th Annual Dinner and Meeting on Monday, May 21 at 6 p.m. at Costa Azzurra Restaurant, 72 Broadway. A family-style meal will be served, annual reports will be received, and officers for 2018-2019 will be installed. Rummage sale
Milford Elks Lodge #1589 will host a rummage sale on May 26, from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m., at 124 New Haven Ave., selling gently used household goods, furniture, books, sporting goods, antiques, toys, bikes, etc. All proceeds will support the club’s many community projects. Rain or shine. Anyone wishing to donate goods may do so beginning on May 16 at the Elks Lodge. Please, no clothing or broken computer parts.
Beth-El benefit gala
The ‘Light the Way’ Annual Spring Gala to benefit Beth-El Center homeless shelter and soup kitchen in Milford will take place on Saturday, June 2, from 6 to 10 p.m. The annual event will take place at the Mill River Country Club in Stratford and will include dinner, dancing and silent and live auctions. White elephant sale
The 61st Annual White Elephant Tag Sale in Milford, one of the largest in the area, will be held Saturday, June 2. Sponsored by the Plymouth Men’s Club, the event will be held 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. on the grounds of the Plymouth Building of the First United Church of Christ (Congregational), 18 West Main Street. Donations of items for the sale are requested. Household goods, small appliances, decorations, small furniture, toys, bikes, and jewelry, etc., will be received at the Plymouth Building (days and evenings) from Tuesday, May 29, through Friday, June 1. Proceeds will benefit Boy Scout Troop 1, the church and local charities. Trash and Treasures
The annual Trash and Treasures sale will be held at Mary Taylor Methodist Church, 168 Broad St., across from the Milford Green from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Friday, June 1 and Saturday, June 2. It will run in conjunction with Mary Taylor’s 47th annual Fair on the Green.
Duck race
It’s Back…..The Milford Harbor Duck Race. Adopt ducks online at milfordduckrace.com. The race will be Saturday, June 9, 11 a.m. to 1 p.m., Downtown Milford at Memorial Bridge. There are 80 prizes worth more than $7,000. Hosted by the United Way of Milford and the Woodruff Family YMCA.
Historical Society tag sale
The Milford Historical Society and its members will hold a tag sale on Saturday, June 9 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. at its headquarters, 34 High St. (Rain date June 10.) June 9 is also Pirate Day, so come to the MHS Country Store to stock up on treasure: pirate rings, scarves, hats, eye patches, beards, flags, etc. It’s also Duck Race Day downtown. Golf Classic
St. Mary School Milford’s 24th Annual Golf Classic is June 11 at The Mill River Country Club in Stratford. There will be golf, raffles, contests, lunch, dinner and more.
