Police said a man who would have walked away with a simple infraction after an incident downtown became combative, spitting on an officer and striking one with a feces-smeared shirt, landing him in much worse trouble.
According to police, on May 19, police saw two men arguing outside a Daniel Street restaurant. One of the men tried to walk away and the other man, Rafael Cruz, 27, of 141 French St., Bridgeport, punched him in the face.
Officers intervened and separated the two men. The man who was punched in the face did not want to press charges, and Cruz was going to be issued an infraction for creating a public disturbance and then would have been released, police said. But Cruz refused to cooperate with officers and tried several times to fight with the officers, police said.
This led to the arrest of Cruz, who later, during the course of his arrest, spit on an officer while being transported to police headquarters. Cruz continued to fight with officers during the booking process, and while in a cell urinated and defecated on the sleeping bench, police said.
“Cruz was given time in the cell to calm down in order to be processed later,” according to a police press release. “When officers tried again to process Cruz he struck an officer in the face with his shirt, which contained urine and feces.”
Police said cruz continued to be combative with officers and ended up being transported to the hospital for observation. They said Cruz eventually became compliant enough to be processed and was released on a $5,000 bond.
Cruz is charged with the following: Creating a public disturbance, possession of less than half an ounce of marijuana, assault on a police officer, criminal mischief, breach of peace, interfering with an officer.
He is scheduled to appear in court June 12.
