Eastbound teams up with Westport for series of original plays

Eastbound Theatre, a division of the Milford Arts Council, is partnering with Westport Community Theatre for a program of six original plays under the banner of “East/West PlayFest.”

Performances will begin July 17 and 18 at Westport Community Theatre, at the Westport Town Hall, 110 Myrtle Street. Admission for the Westport shows will be free. The festival then moves to the Milford Center for the Arts, 40 Railroad Avenue South in Milford, for July 24 to 26. A donation of $10 is suggested for the Milford performances. A portion of the donations will go to rewarding the playwrights, in recognition of the time and energy they have put into their work.

Performance times for all Friday and Saturday shows will be 8 p.m. The Milford shows will also feature matinees at 2 p.m. on Saturday and Sunday.

“We began the festival in July of 2001,” said producer Tom Rushen of Eastbound. “In 2009, we started working with WCT for encore performances. Over these past few years, the partnership has grown, and we felt that a new title was needed that reflected both organizations. The East/West tag is a play on words, but it also gives a sense on the vision for the festival, always keeping our eyes out in multiple directions for playwrights, directors and performers.”

The following plays will be featured:

All’s Fair in Love and Science, by CJ Ehrlich of Chappaqua, NY, features two fathers who raise the stakes in their children’s science fair. Robert Watts of Milford directs. The cast features Steve Yudelson of Newtown and Bill Roberts of Milford.

The High and Low Search, by Michael Weems of Spring, TX finds a couple celebrating their anniversary, only to be plagued by questions about their future. Barry Hatrick of Milford directs. The cast features Bryn Berg of Westbrook and Nick Kaye of Bethel.

Of Butterflies and Roses, by Claudia Haas of White Bear Lake, MN, features two sisters struggling to understand the other’s way of coping with tragedy. Haas won the Summer Audience Award in 2008 for her play, “Wish You Were Here”. Rachel Babcock of Branford directs. The cast features Bryn Berg and Jean Marie Warncke of Stamford.

Testimonial, by Jack Rushen of Stratford, finds an educator being forced into retirement, whose encounter with an enigmatic young woman eases his transition. Rushen has won the Summer Audience Award for his plays, “The Crossing” (2006) and “86 Jake” (2010). Nancy A. Herman of Milford directs. The cast features Dena Lagonigro of Stratford and Luke Lynch of Milford.

To the Roof, by Cynthia Arsenault of Haverhill, MA, takes place in an elevator, where a man must take action when the other passenger announces his plan to jump from the roof. Vic Terenzio of Trumbull directs. The cast features Matt Catalano of Stratford and Peter Haynes of Wilton.

Tumbling, by Mark Lambeck of Stratford, features a young woman who helps an injured jogger, only to be confronted with a troubling admission. Lambeck won the Summer Audience Award in 2007 for his play, “Lucky Day.” Kevin Pelkey of Beacon Falls directs. The cast features Lynette Victoria of Bridgeport and John Michael Whitney of East Haven.

Lifelong Milford resident, and long-time history teacher with the Milford Board of Education, Charles “Charlie” Bristol, 82, beloved husband of Gayanne Riddle Bristol, died suddenly on St. Thomas Island during a Caribbean vacation cruise on July 11.

In addition to his loving wife of 53 years, Charles is survived by Debbie Smith (Paul), of Florida; Alison Spears of East Haven; Andrew Bristol (Heidi), of Ocean City, New Jersey; Alexis Casey (Brendan), of Milford; and Amy Brownewell (Ralph), of Mt. Pleasant, South Carolina.

Charlie also leaves behind twelve grandchildren; Michelle Libretti, Todd Smith and Allison Smith; Andrew, Austin and Alex Spears; Parker and Peyton Bristol; Maguire, Brogan and Beckett Casey; and Marlowe Brownewell. Mr. Bristol’s Daughter Amy is expecting a second child to be named Charlie Anne.  He also leaves 3 great-grandchildren. An avid reader and golfer, he was a devout participant at Saint Peter’s Church, a member of the Milford Irish Heritage Society and the Milford Elks. However, “Mr. Bristol” was best known for, and will forever be remembered as, a generous, talented, caring and gifted high school teacher and mentor. A master story-teller, quick-witted conversationalist, intelligent advisor and wise friend, he is fondly remembered by generations of students who he challenged, encouraged and propelled into adulthood with his friendly manner, encouraging tone and good-humored Irish personality.

Nationwide, more than 350,000 children and youth under the age of 18 are living in out-of-home care throughout the year. In the state of Connecticut, there are over 4,000 youth in out-of-home placement.

During the month of May, Boys & Girls Village joined the National Foster Care Month initiative to raise awareness for the children who require foster care placement.

City of Milford Mayor Benjamin G. Blake recently presented Dr. Steven M. Kant, president and chief executive officer; Carra Conlan, director of permanency services, and Yvette Wooten, therapeutic foster care recruitment and training manager, with a Foster Care Month in Milford Proclamation at City Hall.

With the help of foster parents, many youth have found permanent homes or have been able to reunite with their birth families. Boys & Girls Village’s Therapeutic Foster Care program, which currently serves 60 children in the Greater Bridgeport, New Haven and Waterbury areas, matches qualified foster parents with children in the custody of the Connecticut Department of Children and Families (DCF).

During the past year, Boys & Girls Village has had six youth adopted into permanent families, seven youth transition into independent living situations with parental support, and five reunited with their birth families.

“Our foster parents provide loving and supportive homes for some of the state’s most vulnerable children,” said Dr. Kant. “Through our strong partnership with the Connecticut Department of Children and Families, we rely on these hard-working and caring families to provide Connecticut children with a safe and stable home environment.”

Boys & Girls Village Therapeutic Foster Care (TFC) program matches qualified foster parents with children (6 to 17 years old) who are in the custody of the Connecticut Department of Children and Families. It specializes in the placement of hard-to-place youth — teenage mothers, teenagers in general, and youth with behavioral and emotional difficulties.

Through TFC, foster parents are equipped with training and access to community resources that support them as they provide safe and loving homes for children. Finding permanent homes for children, whether with relatives or with other caring adults, has been central to Boys & Girls Village’s mission of helping at-risk children succeed in life.
