Walnut Beach hosts outdoor street chess exhibition

The Walnut Beach Business and Arts Association will host its first outdoor street chess simultaneous exhibition and tournament on Thursday, May 21, from 7 to 9 p.m.

The rain date is Friday, May 22.

Up to 25 players can be part of this simultaneous chess exhibition and play against chess coach and instructor  Jim Celone.

All ages are welcome. Registration is on a first come basis, and there is a $10 admission fee to play. Prizes will be given to anyone who can defeat the chess coach.

The chess coach, Captain Jim — Master Captain, US Merchant Marine — Celone graduated Yale University in 1983. He has coached the 10-time high school state championship West Haven High School chess team and also won a national championship in 2004.

He is president of the Connecticut State Chess Association and a USCF Senior Tournament Director.  His company, Educational Technologies, specializes in elementary after-school chess programs.

Celone is a professor of mathematics at the University of New Haven and lives in West Haven. His daughter, Christina, also teaches chess and specializes in making chess accessible to young girls.
