Juliana Barrett, an educator and expert on Long Island Sound from UCONN, will be at the Connecticut Audubon Coastal Center on Sunday, Dec. 7, at 2:30 p.m., to speak and answer questions on coastal sustainability.
Her presentation will be co-sponsored by the center and the Milford Environmental Protection Initiative.
Barrett’s presentation will explore climate change impacts predicted for Connecticut over the next 100 years.
“Storms Irene and Sandy showed us all just how vulnerable coastal Connecticut is to damage from storms and tidal inundation,” organizers said. “Over time, Milford is likely to see more extreme downpours and storm surges, more loss of beaches and dunes, and consequently more damage to land and infrastructure.”
The program will discuss how quickly communities need to adapt to these challenges, and what strategies other coastal communities are trying.
Barrett is an associate extension educator and coastal habitat specialist with the University of Connecticut Sea Grant College Program and the Department of Extension.
